Singing through the Year: Be Thou My Vision
Here's what this coming Sunday's readings have to say about following God:
The Psalmist asks, "Oh Lord, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy hill?" (Psalm 15:1)
The prophet Micah asks, "With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high?" (Micah 6:1)
And in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, he says who will actually "be called children of God" and who "will see God" (from Matthew 1).
All three of these readings offer questions—what does walking with God look like? How can I serve God? And all three tell us the answer.
Jesus says that "the peacemakers...will be called children of God," and that "the pure in heart...will see God."
The Psalmist says that that the ones who can be with God "walk blamelessly, and do what is right, and speak the truth from their heart."
And Micah says that "what is good" is "to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with [our] God."
This week I'm singing the Irish hymn "Be Thou My Vision." It's a prayer to follow God in everything, to be filled with the Spirit, to be conformed to the image of Christ. I am praying that God would "be my vision" in the actions of my daily life.
Your listening options are basically limitless for such a famous hymn—here's a lovely choral arrangement to get started >>>

Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
naught be all else to me, save that thou art -
thou my best thought, by day or by night;
waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord.
Thou my great Father; thine own may I be,
thou in me dwelling and I one with thee.
Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise;
thou mine inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only first in my heart,
high King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won,
may I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
Singing through the Year
I'm posting a new hymn each week based on scripture readings for the next Sunday. Each song is enjoyable to sing by yourself—no need for instruments or other folks singing harmony. If you'd like to read more about Singing Through the Year, check out this post >>>
