Singing through the Year: In the Cross of Christ I Glory

Singing through the Year: In the Cross of Christ I Glory

This week's hymn is a meditation on the Cross of Christ. It keeps this truth in our hearts:

"God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us"from this Sunday's epistle reading

The Cross also keeps our priorities in order. The hymn's opening line—"In the Cross of Christ I Glory"—most directly comes from a passage in Galatians that encouraged Christians in Galatia to be humble about how they practiced their faith. Like them, we should pray, "May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (from Gal. 6:14). ("Boast" here is translated as "glory" in earlier translations like the King James Version.)

Here are some recordings of this hymn if you would like to listen and sing along—a solo piano setting and a one with congregation and orchestra.

In the Cross of Christ I Glory

In the cross of Christ I glory,
towering o'er the wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round its head sublime.

When the woes of life o'ertake me,
hopes deceive, and fears annoy,
never shall the cross forsake me.
Lo! it glows with peace and joy.

When the sun of bliss is beaming
light and love upon my way,
from the cross the radiance streaming
adds more luster to the day.

Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,
by the cross are sanctified;
peace is there that knows no measure,
joys that through all time abide.

In the cross of Christ I glory,
towering o'er the wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round its head sublime.

Singing through the Year features a hymn related to next Sunday's lectionary readings. Each hymn will be sung at the Presbyterian church where I am the organist.
