Singing through the Year: Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts

Singing through the Year: Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts

"Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts" expresses adoration for Christ—the One who is the unchanging Truth, the Savior of all who call on him, the Light of the world. The hymn text is based on a medieval Latin hymn, possibly by Bernard of Clairvaux, that was translated by the American pastor Ray Palmer in the mid-1800s.

Here is a solo piano version that is both beautiful and useful if you want to learn the tune and sing along, and here is a congregational setting.

Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts

Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts,
thou fount of life, thou light of all;
from the best bliss that earth imparts
we turn, unfilled, to heed thy call.

Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood;
thou savest those that on thee call;
to them that seek thee thou art good,
to them that find thee, all in all.

We taste thee, O thou living bread,
and long to feast upon thee still;
we drink of thee, the fountain-head,
and thirst our souls from thee to fill.

Our restless spirits yearn for thee,
where'er our changeful lot is cast,
glad when thy gracious smile we see,
blest when our faith can hold thee fast.

O Jesus, ever with us stay;
make all our moments calm and bright.
O chase the night of sin away;
shed o'er the world thy holy light.

Singing through the Year is a weekly series of hymns related to upcoming Sundays' lectionary readings. It features hymns that will be sung at the church where I am organist.
