Singing through the Year: My Faith Looks Up to Thee

Singing through the Year: My Faith Looks Up to Thee

"My Faith Looks Up to Thee" is a prayer of personal devotion to Christ. Like many hymn texts, it begins by expressing a general desire to follow Christ, then develops the theme in the context of suffering and trials, and finally reiterates the desire to be with Christ in death and eternal life. You can read a history of the hymn here.

If you would like a simple piano version to sing along with, check out this recording. You may also enjoy this choral setting arranged by the Gospel musician Richard Smallwood.

My Faith Looks Up to Thee

My faith looks up to thee,
thou Lamb of Calvary,
Savior divine!
Now hear me while I pray;
take all my guilt away.
O let me from this day
be wholly thine!

May thy rich grace impart
strength to my fainting heart,
my zeal inspire.
As thou hast died for me,
O may my love to thee
pure, warm, and changeless be,
a living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread
and griefs around me spread,
be thou my guide;
bid darkness turn to day,
wipe sorrow’s tears away,
nor let me ever stray
from thee aside.

When life’s swift race is run,
death’s cold work almost done,
be near to me.
Blest Savior, then, in love
fear and distrust remove.
O bear me safe above,
redeemed and free!

Singing through the Year features a hymn related to next Sunday's lectionary readings. Each hymn will be sung at the Presbyterian church where I am the organist.
